課程概述

This course will explore prose and poetry in the period between 1830 and 1930 in literary, social, historical and cultural context. The first half of the course will cover works drawn from high Victorian period (1830s-1880s) and the second half will study works written at the turn of the twentieth century and then the early twentieth century (1890s-1920s). In addition to close readings, we will pay special attention to historical and cultural contexts of literary works. The success of this course depends largely on students’ collaboration in synthesizing the knowledge of text and context. Toward the end of the semester, students are expected to reach a comprehensive understanding of Victorian literature and modern literature.

課程目標
Toward the end of the semester, students are expected to reach a comprehensive understanding of Victorian literature and modern literature.
課程要求
1.Engaged Reading
The assigned readings are dense texts that cannot be rendered intelligible simply by the classroom lectures; instead, your active engagement of the reading is required to make sure that you may reach a high level of understanding. Finish the assigned readings before class. If you try to rush through the texts without meeting the challenges these texts provide, you might find this class very demanding.

2.Participation
Come to class with prepared comments and observations. Participate in class discussions collaboratively with either students or with the instructor.

3.Attendance
You are required to attend all class meetings. Since a major portion of this class is premised on the collaborative learning in class, this form of class learning can hardly be substituted in case of your absence. Anyone who misses the class more than 8 hours will NOT pass this course. You are also required to avoid late arrival. Anyone who misses more than one hour of the class will be counted as absent half a time.

4.Tests and Assignments
You are responsible for being in time for tests. No makeup exams will be given unless under extreme circumstances. Assignments are expected to be given on the due day.
